Spartans back in the finals

Top-seeded Strathmore High School football is headed to their third straight Valley final after defeating fifth-seeded California City 27-6 in a CIF Central Section Division VI semifinal game last Friday at home.

The two-time defending champion Spartans (11-1, 5-1 ESL) host fellow East Sequoia League opponent, the sixth-seeded Golden Bears of Sierra Pacific (7-5, 3-3 ESL) on Friday, Nov. 16 for the Valley championsh­ip game.

Against City (7-4), running back Alonso Acevedo rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns on one carry. He also had one rushing 2-point conversion. Quarterbac­k Trace Pugh had the team’s other rushing touchdown. Carlos Moreno converted one of two extra points.

Amando Rodriguez had a fumble recovery and an intercepti­on, while Osvaldo Ibarra had an intercepti­on. No. 5 Woodlake 30 No. 13 Lindsay 22 Thirteenth-seeded Lindsay High School football ended their season with a 30-22 loss to fifth-seeded Woodlake in a CIF Central Section Division V quarterfin­al game on the road last Friday.

The Cardinals (6-5, 3-3 ESL) were down 22-7 to

the East Sequoia League champion Tigers (11-1, 6-0 ESL) but scored 15 points in the third to tie the game. Woodlake got the win on a last minute touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Caesar, Cardinal girls

take first Lindsay High School’s Mckaylie Caesar won her second East Sequoia League individual title after taking first in the ESL championsh­ip cross country meet last Wednesday in Woodlake.

Lindsay tied with Corcoran for first place with 29 points. Sierra Pacific (78) finished third, Woodlake (114) fourth and Granite Hills (125) fifth.

Caesar took first with 18 minutes, 6 seconds, followed by Nancy Vasquez (20:45) in fourth, Briana Amador (20:51) sixth, Jeanette Ramirez (21:05) eighth, Belen Ferreira (21:26) ninth and Esmeralda Cisneros (21:34) 10th.

Other top finishers were Granite Hills’ Elizabeth Hernandez (22:14) in 12th and Summit Collegiate Terri Jimenez (22:14) in 13th.

Lindsay boys placed second behind Corcoran (15) with 57 points. Woodlake (91) came in third, Granite Hills (119) fourth, Summit Collegiate (120) fifth, Farmersvil­le (168) sixth, Sierra Pacific (168) sixth and Strathmore (181) eighth.

Top local finishers were LHS Victor Cisneros (16:57) in sixth, SCCA Daniel Jimenez (17:02) seventh, LHS Rafael Hurtado (17:14) ninth, GHHS Jose Zavala (17:23) 10th.
