Betencourt hat trick aids Cardinals win
Last season, Moises Betencourt led Lindsay High School boys soccer with 21 assists but it looks like he’ll be taking over in the scoring department this season after kicking off his senior year with a hat trick against Monache in a 4-2 non-league victory on the road.
“He’s going to have an incredible year,” LHS head coach Tony Godoy said. “His game has gone up so much.”
The Cardinals were leading the Marauders 2-1 at the half and then scored another two to Monache’s one in the second half. Angel Camargo also scored a goal alongside, Betencourt’s three. Betencourt was the team’s second-high scorer last season with 15 goals Lindsay is coming off a 23-3-2 season where they won their seventhstraight East Sequoia League title and a second-place finish in the CIF Central Section Division IV Championship tournament.
The Cardinals next game is at home against Mt. Whitney on Tuesday, Nov. 27, while the Marauders are at Granite Hills on Tuesday as

Granite Hills High School boys soccer began the season with an 8-0 blanking of Summit Charter Collegiate Academy in a non-league match at home Tuesday.
Jonathan Carranza scored five goals for the Grizzlies while Erick Rincon, Salud Magana and Celedonio Lopez also scored for the team.
GHHS head coach, Pedro Gonzalez, said the team played well in their first game and looked good. He hopes the play will continue throughout the season.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Strathmore 56 Arvin 43
Strathmore High School girls basketball opened the new season with a 56-43 victory over Arvin on the road Tuesday in a non-league game.
The Spartans were led by Jazmine Soto with 18 points, four rebounds and five steals while Kaija Ambriz had 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. Giselle Arellano chipped in nine points and four rebounds.
Next game for the Spartans will be at home against the Cougars of Mcfarland on Tuesday, Nov. 27, for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off.
Porterville 58 Corcoran 14
Thirteen of Porterville High School’s 14 girls basketball players scored in the Panthers’ 58-14 win over Corcoran at home in Tuesday’s non-league game.
Jazlynne Medrano led the team with 13 points and Nseije Ortiz chipped in eight. Zelia Rivera also had six.
PHS head coach Dave Kavern said the team took off the press in the first quarter and sat starters in the fourth. He added that the Panthers still need to do a better job on their half court defense.
Porterville’s next game is Monday, Nov. 26, at home against Redwood.
