Scrimmages hint at season start
First games of fall start Monday, Aug. 19
We’re days away from the first games of the fall season and several area volleyball teams got their first taste of game speed with a five-team scrimmage Wednesday at Granite Hills High School.
Participating in the timed matches were Monache, Porterville, Granite, Lindsay and Summit Charter Collegiate Academy.
The Marauders went as far as the CIF Central Section Division III quarterfinals last season and enter the season as the reigning East Yosemite League champions after winning the EYL title with a perfect 10-0 league record.
On their scrimmage performance, MHS head coach Rosalie Quinones said, “They showed exactly what we’ve been working on and they just kind of stepped it up. Everybody, not just my returning six but all 12. So I have a lot to work with and it’ll be fun this season. Very versatile players and I have a lot
of options. It’s good to see.”
Monache faces Lindsay, who is under a new head coach, in a seasonopener Monday, Aug. 19 at Lindsay High School. Both Porterville and Granite Hills have home season openers next Tuesday with the Panthers taking on Golden West and the Grizzlies playing Fowler.
Second-year GHHS head coach Stacie Nagy said her team is young but playing with energy.
“They have so much enthusiasm this year, they have drive,” Nagy said. “It’s a whole set of new girls. I only have three returners so all these girls are coming up from (junior varsity) and they’re doing very well to start the season, so I’m excited.”
