Another medical professional has earned their Clinical Laboratory Scientist license at Sierra View Medical Center.

Alyssa Kamberg completed the program and passed the state exam to earn her CLS license. Sierra View is only of only a few state certified facilities to offer the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Training Program.

“I’m ecstatic to have completed the clinical laboratory scientist training program, and even happier to be working as a CLS here at Sierra View now that I have received my license,” Kamberg said.

Kamberg’s background is in microbiology and molecular research and she graduated from Fresno State in 2017. The clinical industry soon become her passion and career path.

The Southern Central Valley native was hired as a phlebotomist lab aid in 2018 by the Sierra View lab. When the CLS training opportunity arose, she instantly applied. “Over the 52 weeks I enjoyed training in every area of the lab, in fact, it’s hard to choose which area I like best because each one is unique and I enjoy them all for different reasons,” Kamberg said.

During her training, she gained hands-on experience and briefly had the pleasure of studying at the Tulare County Public Health lab and networked with other clinical scientists from various local hospitals.

“The CLS faculty here have many years of clinical experience, and have done an excellent job in supporting and guiding us as we train,” Kamberg said. “I look forward to continuing to learn from them and to possibly becoming the same influence for trainees down the road.”

Only a handful of trainees who have been through the same program at Sierra View. A CLS Training Program graduate is rare in California.

In fact, because SVMC is one of roughly 10 independently

run programs in the state in accordance with the California Department of Public Health, the chance for applicants is slim. Standards to participate in the program including earning a bachelor’s with specific course requirements.

The commitment is also significant as it’s a year-long hands-on learning program with extensive academic work as well. Once the program is complete, and all of the lab and academic work is done, participants take a state board exam which contains 100 test questions.

This state exam has a low passing percentage, but Kamberg passed with flying colors.
