Who will best heal our nation

- BY FRED MENDOZA Fred Mendoza is a retired educator who lives in Springville.

With the nation’s raging national pandemic crisis, millions out of work, thousands of businesses closing or failing, About 130,000 dead and rising, the continuing health emergency will mean economic activity can’t fully resume.

President Trump calls protesters “terrorists” and warns the governors to jail them otherwise they would look like “jerks.” And the never ending social divisions across our country and now Attorney General William Barr is out to demolish the Department of Justice.

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES 2020 Donald Trump

The pandemic is still raging and Trump pretends otherwise. “It’s going way,” he said in Phoenix with few wearing masks.

Noe of these developments have put an end to the denial that has prevailed at the White House from the start. Trump and his loyal supporters keep acting as if they ignore the seriousness of the coronavirus, it will cease to exist. “Stop testing so many people for the virus. You’re gonna find more cases.” Trump pretends it will disappear, with lethal consequences.

Perhaps Trump feels overwhelmed and outmatched. It sure seems like he’s attempting, however clumsily, to transition from President to an autocrat. He’s using whatever means necessary to mow down those who threaten his re-election. He has shredded almost all of them and replaced them with loyalists. What we have now is his army of supporters in the White House and federal agencies. John Bolton writes, “Donald Trump as president who sees his office as an instrument to advance his own personal and political interests over those of the nation. Trump poses a danger to the Republic if re-elected.”

Did you know Trump has no agenda for his second term? He has constructed an imaginary bubble in which he’s insulated from bad news and negative feedback. I guess he’ll just put together a second term agenda overnight. Remember, “he’s a genius.” A Wall Street editorial warned he could be defeated because he has no message beyond personal grievances and “four more years of himself.” Perhaps at last we have passed the peak of Trump’s popularity as witnessed by his attempt to revive his reelection bid with a mass rally in Tulsa which sputtered badly. His speech that night was described as “rambling grievances.”

Joe Biden

We need Americans of goodwill to unite against politics that too often have been characterized by corruption, carelessness, self-dealing, misinformation, ignorance and just plan meanness. It’s clear we need a change of leadership to get our country back on the right track.

In November we have the chance to elect someone who has devoted his entire life in service to his country and has led with those values. That person is former Vice President Joe Biden. He has developed a reputation as the nation’s charming but eccentric uncle. His unvarnished, man-of-thepeople for all ethnic, linguistic, religious or cultural ties is why our country supports him.

Joe Biden has character, experience and courage to guide us through one of our darkest times and heal us through a long recovery. He will surround himself with good people who reflect the diversity of our country: experts, scientists and military officials who actually know how to run government and care about doing a professional job. His 36 years in the Senate and eight years as Vice President is virtually unmatched.

The election in November will be more important than any in our lifetimes. This huge crisis has created a moral, spiritual and emotional disaster. Wake up America!
