To Grocery Outlet for its Independen­ce from Hunger Food Drive. As a result, more than $6,000 was donated to the St. Anne’s Food Pantry. And to Julie Allen, who alone donated $1,000 to the food drive.

To all the work being done by the Tule River Parkway Associatio­n. In August three new groups adopted gardens as part of the Tule River Native Plant Demonstrat­ion Gardens.

To David Blaine, who successful­ly soared above the Arizona desert as he was suspended by only 52 weather balloons. Blaine rehearsed for the feat last month right here in Portervill­e.

To City Councilman Daniel Penaloza who met with the homeless along the Tule River to listen to their concerns and extending an effort to work with them.

To Sierra View Medical Center for being honored by the American Heart Associatio­n with awards presented to the hospital for its treatment of strokes.

To Patrol 73 of the Portervill­e Fire Department who returned home earlier this week after being assigned 13 days to the River Fire in Salinas and to OES 411 of the Portervill­e Fire Department who returned home from the SCU Lightning Complex.

Since this weekend is Labor Day, we will take the chance to honor all those in labor who have put in a hard’s day work, day in and day out. And of course this year we honor all those essential workers who are on the front lines during this COVID-19 pandemic.
