While the Edwards family is from Porterville, for them the Creek Fire has definitely hit close to home.

The Edwards family has a cabin below Shaver Lake.

That area has been ravaged by the Creek Fire which has also forced the closure of Sierra National Forest. “We don’t want to lose our home,” Sherry Edwards said.

But she added the family knows what’s most important are people’s lives. “Of course we’re concerned,” she said. But she added the family was most concerned about the lives of those who live in the area “above all else.”

She added the family knows others who live in the Shaver Lake area on a permanent basis. “We’re just concerned for them,” Edwards said.

She also said she knew it was important for those who know her family to know they’re safe. There are others from Porterville who also have cabins in that area and Edwards said about those she knows who are from Porterville who have cabins in the Shaver Lake area that they are all safe as well.

She also stressed how thankful her family is for the firefighters and are praying for them. She also said the family is praying the firefighters are able to contain the fire as soon as possible.

As of Monday night, Edwards said the family was informed their cabin was still there. but generally as far as the status of their cabin is concerned, the information they receive comes from “just what we get from the news basically.

“We are well aware it’s just a material possession for us. Those things can be replaced.”

She said her family went to the cabin

two weeks ago and her son went to the cabin a week ago. And her family had planned to go to the cabin and would have been there as the fire was burning. “We had planned to go and changed our minds,” she said.

When asked if she was thankful they changed their minds about going to Shaver Lake, Edwards said “Absolutely.”

The Edwards family has had the cabin for 20 years. “It was just kind of one of those dreams to have a nice place to go and stay together,” Edwards said.

“There’s a lot of things to do at Shaver,” Edwards also said, adding her husband, Jim, is an avid fisherman.

Edwards summed up the whole situation simply and best when she said, “it’s just very sad.”
