Authorities said 58-yearold Reginald Eugene Sanders will be released from custody Tuesday after further investigation following Sanders’ arrest revealed that another man allegedly caused a fatal traffic collision over the weekend.

Initially, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested Sanders, of Victorville, on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated early Saturday morning at Victor Valley Global Medical Center, where he was being treated for injuries related to the crash.

According to Victorville Sheriff’s Station spokesperson Mara Rodriguez, Sanders “showed indications” of being under the influence of alcohol, and deputies believed he ran a red light, causing the crash at the intersection of Palmdale and Cobalt roads.

Booking records show he was taken into custody at 5:45 a.m., a little over three hours after the collision.

But on Tuesday, Rodriguez said investigators now believe a 29-year-old man driving a Hyundai Tiburon ran the red light and caused the crash.

“Sanders will be released from custody today,” Rodriguez said. “The full report, along with toxicology results for all involved parties, will be sent to the District Attorney’s office upon completion. Any charges against Mr. Sanders will be determined by the DA’S office, at that time.”

According to a previous report, Sanders was driving a Ford Explorer westbound on Palmdale Road and collided with the Hyundai, which was northbound on Cobalt Road. First responders were called at about 2:18 a.m.

The crash shut down a stretch of Palmdale Road as investigators worked the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai was extricated and taken to a local hospital where he later died. His passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner officials have not released the identity of the two people as of Tuesday afternoon.

Angel Recendez told the Daily Press the woman killed in the crash was the mother of their three children. Recendez described Sarah JarrellWorden as a “really good mother” who had been turning her life around over the past year for the children, who are 5, 4 and 3 years old.

Recendez, who lives in Chicago, set up a Go Fund Me account that he hopes will help pay for funeral expenses.

He said he met JarrellWorden in the High Desert while growing up in the foster system.

Recendez said he has not yet told his children of their mother’s passing and likely won’t do so until they return to California. Recendez said the plan is to transport her body from the area to Tulare County, where her family is from.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone that witnessed the crash is asked to call the Victorville Sheriff’s Station at 760-241-2911.
