If this was an election I would withdraw from the race

- BY CHARLES WHISNAND cwhisnand@portervillerecorder.com

It’s not like I’m panicking or anything but if this was an election I would drop out of the race and endorse Dustin Della.

I’m like one of those Presidential candidates you never heard of who for some reason announce they’re running for president and then after like the first debate that features like a zillion candidates in which they got the chance to talk for like two minutes they say something like they never realized how difficult running for president would be and decide to drop out of the race.

But this isn’t an election so I will press on for the rest of the season. And to quote one of the most used sports cliches of all time, “it’s still early.” And to quote another over-used sports cliché “I can still turn this thing around.”

But so far I’m heading to my second straight season of having the title of the “Best Last Place Picker in America.”

I’m still over .500 but barely at 20-18-1 after having a subpar week at 4-5. I’m also not off to a good start this week as I picked Tampa Bay to beat Chicago in the Thursday night game.

Dustin Della of Suncrest Bank, Mary Quijas of Juicy Burger and David Horowitz of Horowitz Jewelers all picked Tampa Bay as well. The only one off to a 1-0 start this week is J.R. Flores of J.R.S Barbershop as he picked Da Bears.

Della though had an outstanding week last week, going 7-2 to expand his lead and is now 27-11-1. But now J.R. Is tied with Dustin as he also went 7-2 last week and after the first game this week both J.R. and Dustin are now 27-12-1.

Horowitz went 6-3 last week and was 24-141. Quijas went 4-5 last week, leaving her at 2315-1.

And I’m likely not going to help myself any this week by picking the Giants. I know better but there’s no way I could ever pick Dallas.

I’ve written before about my feelings for the Cowboys, a team I’ve rooted against ever since I was 5 years old when I first became a 49er fan — only to watch Dallas beat San Francisco in the playoffs for three straight years.

And I’ve written about Schadenfraude, the German term for feeling the joy in the misery of others. Even though I enjoy watching the 49ers win — I enjoy watching the Cowboys lose soooooooooo much more than watching the 49ers win. And I’m sure many San Francisco, New York Giant, Philadelphia and Washington fans feel the same way.

Anyway, again we encourage all of you to frequent the businesses of our prognosticators whenever it’s possible while following current guidelines. And here’s wishing you wall have a blessed week.
