Can’t do it, still picking the 49ers

- BY CHARLES WHISNAND

I have to admit it’s a lot easier as “America’s Best Last Place Picker” to remain a loyal fan.

I’m picking the San Francisco 49ers to be the Los Angeles Rams this week even though that’s not the logical pick. And admittedly if I had a chance to be anything other than “America’s Best Last Place Picker” it would be awfully difficult to pick the 49ers.

I’m just glad the tradition of the rivalry has been restored and the San Francisco 49ers are again playing the Los Angeles Rams. Of course they’re not actually playing in San Francisco and L.A.

The game between the two teams earlier this year was in Santa Clara and this Sunday’s game will be in Inglewood. But at least symbolically the 49ers and Rams are representing San Francisco and L.A. as they should be.

So my decision to pick the 49ers is sort of like those teams who have nothing to lose that always go for it on fourth down.

Sort of like what Mike Mccarthy and the Cowboys did on Thanksgiving Day. Although in the woeful NFC East, the Cowboys actually had a lot to lose.

And yes, it’s irritating a team from the NFC East may make the playoffs with a worse record than the 49ers.

As far as our prognosticators, Dustin Della must have been really busy at Suncrest Bank last week because he had his worst week in the last two years, going just 2-6. But he’s still in first place at 66-39-1.

But Mary Quijas of Juicy Burger is gaining on Dustin after going 4-4 last week. Mary is now 64-41-1 on the year.

Right behind Mary is J.R. Flores of J.R.’S Barbershop, who also went 4-4 last week and is now 62-43-1 on the season.

Don’t count out David Horowitz of Horowitz Jewelers, who went 3-51 last week, but actually gained a game on Dustin.

He’s as the cliché goes within “striking distance” of Dustin, six games behind at 60-45-1.

I guess as “American’s Best Last Place Picker” I can say I’m in “striking distance” of the prognosticator who’s in “striking distance” of the leader. I too went 3-5 last week, but continue to stay over the “Whisnand Line,” as I’m still over .500 at 5451-1.

As always we encourage our readers to frequent the businesses of our prognosticators whenever possible while following current guidelines. And as always we wish you a blessed week.
