Danny Marberry
Danny Marberry was born July 1, 1943, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and passed away December 7, 2020, in Porterville, California.
Danny was born at home on the family farm in Oklahoma to Dewey Willis Marberry and Evelyn Wenema (Hammond) Marberry. Danny’s parents decided to sell their farm in Oklahoma and move their growing family to California in 1946, finally settling in the outskirts of Porterville.
Danny had nine Siblings. Frances, Ella Mae, Edward, Edwin, Buddy, Carolyn, George, Donald, and Dorothy.
He attended Terra Bella Elementary, where he was awarded the 1957 American Legion Award for distinguished achievement. He graduated from Porterville Union High in 1961 and Porterville College earning his Psych Tech License.
Danny worked for 42 years at the Porterville Developmental Center and particularly enjoyed working in the children’s unit and made special friendships with several of the children. He could often be found riding his bicycle between units, making “rounds.” Danny was a hardworking man who never seemed to rest. He owned or co-owned several businesses, including the Hof Brau, the Mint at the Paul Bunyan, and several card rooms. Upon his retirement from Porterville Developmental Center, he worked at Eagle Mountain Casino as a card room manager, overseeing their card tables - a perfect retirement hobby/ job for him. Danny loved baseball and basketball. His love of baseball was seen in the 15+ years of coaching his famous Marshall’s Little League team and several All-star teams. He served on the Little League Board, worked to keep the fields maintained, umpired, and worked on the ‘new’ outfield wall advertising initiative - which consisted of painted plywood and t-posts. He truly enjoyed coaching and supporting Porterville’s youth. He would pick the team up for practice, and they’d pile into the back of his El Camino. He spent hours hitting ground balls to the kids where he was rarely seen without his sunflower seeds. His teams won many championships over his coaching years, including 1985 when he coached and managed the district winning All-star Team. Danny enjoyed watching his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids play sports or any activity. From baseball, basketball, softball, swimming, soccer, baton, dance or marching with the band, he was always their biggest fan.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Edwin, his sisters Frances, Ella Mae, and Carolyn, and his sons Shawn Marberry and Chris Crowell.
Danny leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Pamela Marberry, his children Sherry Marberry and Shelbie Akin, his grandchildren; Nathan Gentry, Jamie Lee Gentry, Kaedryn Ennis, Kylie Keene, Grace Akin, and Riley Akin; his great-grandchildren; Kennedy, Presley, and Sawyer Gentry, Andee Ennis, Aleyah Gentry, and Hudson Gentry. He also leaves behind his siblings, Edward, Buddy, George, Donald, and Dorothy Marberry, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family. A
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at 1pm at Porterville Funeral Center, 765 W Henderson Ave, Porterville. Danny’s wishes were for any contributions to be sent in his name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memorial Fund, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.
