John William Hanson Feb 14, 1996 - Feb 28, 2021
John William Hanson was born on February 14, 1996 in Lindsay, California and went home to his Savior and Redeemer on February 22, 2021. He was just 25 years old.
John spent his formative years in Porterville, California. He attended Zion Lutheran School in Terra Bella from kindergarten through the fifth grade, was an active member of the Porterville 2nd Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, and enjoyed Scouting.
John moved to Star, Idaho at the age of 12 and attended Eagle Middle School, was an active member of the Star 2nd Ward and enjoyed Boy Scouts. John went on to graduate from Eagle High School, in Eagle, Idaho as part of the Class of 2014.
John was quick with a smile and loved stories of all types. He was a voracious reader from an early age and listened with rapt attention to the tall tales told by his extended family. John was known for his kind heart and willingness to help others. During high school, John's spirit of service inspired him to enlist in the United
States Marine Corps and he spent his senior year in the Military Entrance Processing (MEPS) program. He left for Marine Corps boot camp as soon after graduation as he could.
As a Marine, John rose to the rank of Corporal serving as a crew member of a Light Armor Reconnaissance Division, based in Twentynine Palms, California. During his Marine Corps service, John trained and operated in numerous countries on three different continents. John also served on the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6). Decades before, John's great-uncle, John William Hapner of Walla Walla, Washington, also served on the "Bonnie Dick," a serendipitous bond which delighted both Johns.
A proud Marine, John enjoyed the study of and training in martial arts, spending years honing his technique and earning a first degree blackbelt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP). John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed the mountains of Idaho, feeling very much at home in the natural cathedral of God's creation.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, John participated in a veteran vocational education program located in Simi Valley, California. After completing the program, he moved to Boise, Idaho where he worked as a new construction framer before working his way into a finish carpenter with the long-term goal of becoming a contractor.
John is survived by his mother, Dicsie Gullick (Richard), of Star Idaho; his father, Jason Ross Hanson, of Bodcaw, Arkansas; his grandmother, Elsie Lee, of Porterville, California; his brothers: Thomas Kramer of Long Beach, California; David Kramer of Nampa, Idaho; William Gullick of Star, Idaho; sister Katherine Gullick of Star, Idaho and a loving extended family of numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. John was preceded in death by his beloved grandfather, Harry Richard Lee Jr.
There will be a Memorial Open House for John on Saturday, March 6th, 2021 from 2:00pm to 4:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 484 S. Main Street, Star, Idaho. John hated funerals and did not want one for himself, however we don't think he would mind his family and friends getting together to swap funny stories, share our memories and celebrate his life.
A private committal service will be held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin, California. John's family asks that contributions in John's memory be made to Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, 1223 ½ 28th Street, Suite A, San Diego, CA 92102.
