In 1957, the first civilian electricit­y-generating nuclear facility in America opened in Pennsylvan­ia.

In 1958, a U.S. rocket launched SCORE (Signal Communicat­ion by Orbiting Relay Equipment), the world’s first communicat­ions satellite, into space.
