Here’s to Appalachian State and Jimmy Kimmel Bowl

- BY CHARLES WHISNAND cwhisnand@portervillerecorder.com

I have seen Adam Sandler’s remake of “The Longest Yard,” which is a couple of hours I’ll never get back in my life. I do highly recommend the original “The Longest Yard,” starring Burt Reynolds, though.

Anyway I remember a line in the movie in which Sandler is talking to the warden and telling him how big-time college programs schedule easy opponents to begin the season like “Appalachian State.” Of course I think it was a couple years later that Appalachian State went into the “Big House” and upset Michigan, so Appalachian State clearly removed itself from than easy opponent list.

As far as Michigan, the Wolverines are in the College Football Playoff so I guess it’s now Jim “I guess I no longer really want to coach for the 49ers again” Harbaugh.

Appalachian State is now in a bowl game and is playing Western Kentucky, which to me sounds more like a meaningless match up in the NIT basketball tournament than it does a big-time bowl game. But we Fearless Prognosticators aren’t afraid to pick a game I’m sure none of us know nothing about.

Then there’s the Jimmy Kimmel Bowl, which I think is absolutely awesome. I’m hoping a bowl game is eventually named after my college roommate, Will Ferrell. (Actually Ferrell was never my roommate, I briefly met him, said hi and shook his hand and that was it). The Will Ferrell “Elf” Bowl would be absolutely awesome, too. We fearless Prognosticators are also not afraid to pick the winner of the Jimmy Kimmel Bowl, which is either going to be Oregon State or Utah State, even though I’m sure we know nothing about that game, either.

So the meaningless bowl season has begun, although Fresno State is playing UTEP in a game I’m interested in obviously because it involves the Bulldogs, but I still have no idea what bowl they’re playing in.

As always there’s plenty of football to enjoy this weekend. And as always we encourage you to frequent the businesses of our Fearless Prognosticators whenever possible and safe. And as always we wish you a blessed week.
