Seals and Society traveling exhibition now on display at Seacoast Science Center
RYE — Seacoast Science Center announces that a new traveling exhibition, Seals and Society, is on display now through Dec. 2. Created by a team of passionate biologists, in collaboration with New Bedford Whaling Museum, this beautifully designed 12panel exhibit dives into the daily lives of seals, with special focus on harbor and gray seals, the two most locally abundant species in the northeast region.
Seals and Society shares cultural, scientific, social, and ecological stories about these specially adapted pinnipeds. Stunning photographs, custom graphics, and up-to-date research data bring the viewer into the seals’ watery world to help us understand their lives and our relationship with them.
Gray and harbor seals have been on the Atlantic coast and intertwined with humans for millenia. We share our shores and seas with seals. Seals and Society shares stories of our relationship with them from Indigenous perspective to present day.
Seals and Society compliments Seacoast Science Center’s permanent exhibition detailing the work of its Marine Mammal Rescue (MMR) program. Here, visitors can learn about the response, rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals that haul out or strand on the shore within MMR’s response territory—Essex, Mass., to the Maine border. Additionally, visitors learn about how MMR’s work, along with partner organizations along the eastern seaboard, is helping advance scientific research of marine mammals in the Atlantic and provide insight on the status of our ocean.
Seals and Society was co-Created by Dr. Andrea Bogomolni, Ren Bettencourt, Elizabeth Bradfield, and Elizabeth James-Perry, this exhibit reflects the research and work of many institutions and individuals, created with the support of the New Bedford Whaling Museum (NBWM), the Wheatland Charitable Trust, and the US Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) with contributing editors Monica DeAngelis (NUWC) and Robert Rocha (NBWM). Haley Art Gallery hosts Ekphrastic Poetry Writing Workshop
KITTERY, Maine – Haley Art Gallery will host an Ekphrastic Poetry Writing Workshop on Oct. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. Poet and artist, Laima Vince will direct the workshop inviting participants to write a poem that combines the visual elements of a painting in words. The workshop fee is $30 per person. To sign up, email haleygalleery@comcast.net.
The two-hour workshop will explore the art form of the Ekphrasis poem – which is inspired by a painting
and uses words and imagery to interact with the imagery in the painting by expressing the emotion, and/or subject matter of the painting, or by describing the poet’s emotional experience of the poem. Workshop participants will read examples of Ekphrastic poems, discuss what makes them powerful poetic works, and engage with the paintings in the gallery’s current exhibit – In Art We Trust. Participants will write their own ekphrasis poems and can share their work with the community of writers.
Laima Vince is both a painter and a poet. She earned her MFA in Writing with a concentration in Poetry from Columbia University and has taught creative writing for 28 years. She currently teaches creative writing courses in the English Department at the University of Southern Maine.
Haley Art Gallery’s In Art We Trust exhibit and Fall End of Season Sale will be on through Nov. 18. Taylor Marie Band debuts at Auspicious Brew
DOVER — Taylor Marie Band and David Corson will be making their debut performance at Auspicious Brew with some original tunes on Oct. 21, at 8 p.m.
The Taylor Marie Band is a local country-pop band from Dover, N.H. Taylor writes music that reflects the everyday world of a young adult playing many different roles. Taylor has been playing and writing music since she was 12 years old and was originally inspired by her dad and Taylor Swift. Other inspirations include James Taylor, Kelsea Ballerini and Shania Twain. Taylor has played on radio stations such as 96.3FM JOPPA, 95.3 WMNH Granite State of Mind in Manchester and 92.5 The River. Taylor Marie and her band are excited to be performing at Auspicious Brew this fall. They’ve also played at venues such as Garrison Players Art Center in Rollinsford, N.H. , Corner Point Brewing Company in Berwick, Maine and The Warner Singer/Songwriter Festival in Warner, N.H. Her full band includes Jake Bartolin on lead guitar, Jake Kallander on bass and Travis Rummo on drums.
David Corson is a pop singer-songwriter who surfaced from the rural town of Exeter, N.H. and currently resides in Dover, N.H. David captures his listeners with a passionate voice and lyrics anyone can relate to. He has been playing in the seacoast area for over ten years and has grown as a solo musician in that time. David’s style of music has been compared to the likes of Ray Lamontagne, David Gray and Ed Sheeran. David was also nominated for a New England Music Award for Best in NH in 2021 alongside some other
amazing acts. After this long in the industry, David has become the veteran singer/songwriter he set out to be at 18.
Auspicious Brew is known for their craft made kombucha as well as other tea and coffee based drinks. To listen to their music Taylor Marie and David Corson are streaming everywhere. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.
