SILVER SPRING - Aldrich Cornelius Mitchell, Jr., 89, formerly of Rye, New Hampshire, peacefully passed away on February 22, 2024, in Bethesda, Maryland. Affectiona­tely known as “Al” among his friends and “Bobby” to his family, he was born on June 4, 1934, in Orrville, Alabama, to Aldrich C. Mitchell, Sr., and Mary Mitchell.

After serving in the United States Air Force for a decade, Al embarked on a career with Mobil Oil before retiring from the Internal Revenue Service. Settling in the area following his time at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH, he became an integral part of the community, holding various positions, including Selectman and Supervisor of the Checklist for Rye. Al was keenly interested in current events, politics, and cars, often engaging in discussion­s with others. His commitment to public service was unwavering, and he cherished the connection­s he made with those around him.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jessie Mitchell, their six children: Aldrich C. Mitchell, III; Jacqueline Mitchell Hunter (husband Jeffrey Hunter); Stephan Mitchell; Teresa Mitchell Best (husband Leonard Best); Tammy Mitchell; and Cheryl Mitchell (husband Bruce Hamilton), as well as his nieces, nephews, cousins, twelve grandchild­ren, and seven great-grandchild­ren.

Preceded in death by his parents, Aldrich C. Mitchell, Sr., and Mary Mitchell, as well as his sisters Kate Jones and Elizabeth Lawson, Al leaves behind a legacy of service, warmth, and engagement. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiratio­n to all who knew him, and may he rest in peace, secure in the knowledge that his contributi­ons to his community and family will be cherished forever.

Services will be held at Wiseman Funeral Home & Chapel at 4591 Allentown Rd, Camp Springs, MD 20746, on Saturday, March 9th. The viewing will start at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. A live stream link will be provided for remote participat­ion on the morning of the service.
