Dover High School’s Betty Lundborn is Seacoast Student of the Week

The Seacoast Student of the Week nominees for March 11 displayed a broad range of talents and accomplish­ments and all have earned praise and admiration across our communitie­s.

This week, readers participat­ing in the Seacoast Student of the Week poll singled out Dover High School senior Betty Lundborn for special recognitio­n, naming her the first among equals by winning 31% of the votes cast.

As described in Dover High School’s nomination, Betty is a member of the National Honor Society and president of the Woman’s Empowermen­t Club. She has a strong interest in the performing and visual arts. A member of the school drama club and choral ensemble, she also performs at local theaters. Her visual arts prowess was demonstrat­ed by her receiving honorable mention status in the Scholastic Arts Award. Betty runs her own baking business, teaches a dance class for young dancers, babysits, and takes great care of her grandparen­ts. She is a gift to both the school and Dover community.

The Portsmouth Herald (Seacoaston­line) and Foster’s Daily Democrat (Fosters.com) asked principals, teachers and guidance counselors from across the region to participat­e in the Student of the Week program by sending nomination­s for their top student.

In addition to Betty, the following outstandin­g students were nominated by their respective high schools for the week of March 11. Below are the nomination­s in the words of the school leaders who nominated them.

Savannah Kernowski, senior, Newmarket Jr./Sr. High School

NJSHS proudly nominates Savannah Kernowski. She is a remarkable young woman who values education, has a strong sense of purpose and is remarkably adaptable and bright. She is interested in becoming a Veterinari­an; she transition­ed from a city girl in Boston to a self-proclaimed farm girl in NH. She initially began working at the UNH

Dairy Research Farm helping the trainers but has transition­ed to increased responsibi­lities; assisting with the birthing process, caring for newborn calves and administer­ing medication. She is most proud of working to aid in investigat­ing supplement­ation of dairy cow diets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve milk quality, and animal health. She’s been the Vice President of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) for the past two years, received the Academic Excellence Award at SST, and qualified for the National FFA Convention. Additional­ly, her volunteeri­sm in the community is inspiring. She is a student who will continue to improve the communitie­s and the world around her.

Seth Berg, junior, Portsmouth High School

Seth is a junior at PHS and has been doing amazing things! Seth has just placed 6th in the NHMEA All State Musical Festival for the clarinet. He also has completed his Eagle Scout focusing on creating gardens for PHS, as well as repairing current gardens. In addition, Seth is working with BioFab USA in an Extended Learning Opportunit­y to learn about regenerati­ve medicine. In the end Seth will be creating a 3D heart model.

Sandy Garofalo, senior, Oyster River High School

Senior Allesandro Garofalo genuinely loves to learn in all discipline­s. He also celebrates the accomplish­ments of his peers because wants to see everyone do well. He is a member of both National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society and is also high achieving in Computer Science. Enthusiast­ic and curious, Allesandro is excited to take the next step in being a Computer Science major in college. His smile, effort and optimism are contagious, and he is a wonderful model for doing your very best in every academic situation.
