Turbocam volunteers packing 100,000 meals for children

- Karen Dandurant

BARRINGTON — Turbocam is again hosting a Feed My Starving Children MobilePack event, hoping to send more than 100,000 meals to kids worldwide, surpassing the 500,000 milestone in five years.

Kimberly Nicols, employee growth and development manager for the turbomachinery company, said Turbocam has a strong focus on giving back to the community, and this project is just one example.

The event will be held at its 38 Redemption Road location April 5 and 6. Nicols said openings for volunteers from the community to help pack the food are still available.

"We are still in need of 200 volunteers across shifts on both days as we close on reaching our goal," said Nicols. "Adults and children 5 years and older will measure and scoop ingredients, seal bags and prepare boxes for shipping. Over 500 volunteers are needed across four shifts."

Volunteers can register at give.fmsc.org/campaign/2404-033mibarrington-nh-new-hampshire-turbopack/c495806.

According to Nicols, FMSC is a faithbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit Turbocam has partnered with to bring the relief program to New Hampshire.

"It is completely volunteer-led," she said.

Nicols said each pack of food contains nutritious items like rice, soy, dehydrated vegetable mixes, vitamins and minerals and other non-perishable foods.

"We can't track exactly where the meals go," said Nicols. "We know in past years, they have gone to countries like Rwanda, Ukraine and Nicaragua. We just love being able to do this, being able to help. We pack a lot of meals and it is a fun time. There is music. People range in age from children to the elderly and everyone works hard to make this happen. We love our volunteers."

Employees each get eight-hours of paid time to volunteer for this or other community service projects.
