Boy, 16, charged as adult, accused of burglary, rape

A 16-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with rape, among other counts, in connection with a burglary at a Hammond home earlier this year.

Isiah Barboza, of Hammond, is one of four defendants — including Alexis Lietz, Elias Costello and Na t h a n i e l A s b u r y — charged in the July 16 burglary in the 3000 block of Crane Place that led to the rape of a female victim inside the house, according to court records.

Barboza was charged Friday in Lake Superior Court with two counts each of rape, criminal confinement and burglary. He was also charged with one count of residential entry, court records show.

Lietz reportedly let the other three inside her fam- ily’s home and drew them a map of the house and its contents, a probable cause affidavit states.

The morning of July 16, the three males wore ski masks and gloves and entered the house, the affidavit states. A female who was sleeping on a couch was awakened by the intruders, and one of them pointed a shotgun at her and ordered her to lie face down on the couch, according to the affidavit.

The female said she heard the burglars “rummaging through the house” and “it seemed like the suspects knew where to go” and “what to take,” the affidavit states.

The female also said that two of the burglars raped her, according to the affidavit.

Lietz, 20, has pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary with a deadly weapon and armed robbery. A judge denied Lietz’s request earlier this month to be released on electronic monitoring. She is scheduled to be in court again Nov. 13, court records show.

Costello, 18 was charged with rape, burglary, armed robbery, criminal confinement and sexual battery. He is set to appear in court Nov. 20.

Asbury, 21, is charged with two counts of rape and one count each of burglary, armed robbery, criminal confinement, intimidation, pointing a firearm and resisting law enforcement. He has a hearing scheduled Wednesday.

A court date and attorney were not listed for Barboza as of Monday afternoon, according to court records.
