Deadline for property tax deductions Monday

-

VALPARAISO — Porter County Auditor-elect Vicki Urbanik reminds taxpayers of the upcoming state deadline to apply for a property tax deduction, such as the homestead deduction or over-65 deduction.

Taxpayers must file their application with the Porter County Auditor’s Office on or by Jan. 5 in order to have the property tax benefit apply to their property tax bills payable in 2015.

The auditor’s office is in Suite 204 of the Porter County Administration Building, 155 Indiana Ave.

Indiana’s property tax deductions include the standard and supplemental homestead deductions, the mortgage deduction, the over-65 deduction, the blind or disabled deduction, the deductions applicable to veterans, and the solar energy heating or cooling system deduction.

Taxpayers who already have a deduction in place and who continue to meet the eligibility requirements do not need to re-apply.

Taxpayers with the mortgage deduction should re-apply if the property is sold, the title is changed, or the home refinanced.

The deduction forms, eligibility requirements, and other information are available at the website of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.
