Gary to reopen beaches Friday at reduced capacity

- By Meredith Colias-Pete

Gary will partly reopen beaches starting Friday, Mayor Jerome Prince said.

Marquette Park’s shelters and parking lots are limited to 75% capacity, he said. Gary Police and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies will turn away crowds over the limit, he said.

“I’m confident we have developed a plan to provide access to our beautiful beaches and parks while still controlling the number of people visiting the sites, which is important in our fight against the spread of the virus,” Prince said in a statement.

This phase goes through at least Labor Day, he said. The city announced a temporary twoweek closure July 28, citing some crowding and public health concerns.

However, the move faced some criticism on social media as Marquette Park remained a popular spot to get outdoor exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other posts appeared to show some Miller residents using the beach.

Beach goers will not be allowed to park on residential streets near Marquette Park, Prince said. Anyone parked on private property will face a tow and fines. Gary police will not release towed cars on the weekend, he said.

Inflatables are not allowed and children should be within reach of parents, Prince said. Police can remove and fine beach goers that litter, have alcohol, or use grills.

“We all want to enjoy the rest of our summer, but the health of our families, friends and neighbors is our highest priority,” Prince said.
