One fair-weather activity was in full swing recently, as hundreds of bargain hunters searched for treasurers at the Highland Community-Wide Yard Sale.

Dozens of households offered their unwanted items during a two-day event coordinated by the Highland Council of Community Events.

“I love this sale, this is the third year I’m participating,” Highland resident Sherry Croach said as she set Disney collectable items for customers. “It gives me a chance to meet neighbors I haven’t talked to before, as well as meet many other people as they stop by.”

Highland resident Deb Barker agreed, and added that the sale also shows that everyone is working together to bring in new business to the town.

Mavis Hernandez, of Hammond, schedules time each weekend to search for bargains at the various sales in northwest Indiana.

“I usually have an early start and drive around to find signs,” Hernandez said. “I saw one on Cline Avenue, that directed me here. I’m looking for jewelry and yard planters.”

Salvador Cruz and his family used to have their own yard sales for many years.

“This one, with the whole town joining together, is great,” he said. “It’s much easier for everyone.”

Erica Wolak supervised her daughter Addison 7, and her friend Jalyne, 9, as they set up their unwanted toys for sale.

“This is fun,” said Jalyne. “I have a lot of things to sell.”

A young family from Hammond was in a downtown Highland restaurant for lunch when they overheard another family talking about their unique finds from various sales.

“They told us the locations were on the Highland Council of Community Events website,” Jim Young said. “My wife checked it out, so we’re heading out to see what we can find.”

Tyler and Jackie Unger, of Highland, have a hobby that benefits not only their DIY skills, but helps out other people as well. They heard about Highland’s sales and spent the good part of Saturday morning sorting out items at about a dozen residences.

“We go to thrift stores and garage sales to find furniture to fix up,” Tyler Unger said. “After we repair, paint or do whatever else is needed, we donate the items to families in need. The couple finds those homes through various local churches and organizations.
