Timme tops preseason All-America hoops team

-

Drew Timme could have left for the NBA after leading Gonzaga into last season’s national title game. He likely would have been drafted and gone on to have a solid career.

But Timme wanted more.

Certainly, a chance to finish off a championship run, but also to work one more season with coach Mark Few.

There was an added benefit, too: Timme was the lone unanimous selection by a 63-person media panel on The AP preseason All-America team released Monday.

Timme was joined by Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn, UCLA guard Johnny Juzang, Villanova point guard Collin Gillespie and Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis.

The 6-10 Timme transformed from a freshman backup to one of the nation’s best big men last season, earning secondteam All-America honors. He was a key cog in Gonzaga’s return to the NCAA title game, averaging 19 points and 7.0 rebounds.

NBA: Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points, Anthony Davis had 22 points and four blocks, and LeBron James scored 19 as the Lakers beat the visiting Grizzlies 121-118 on Sunday for their first win of the season. Anthony, 37, moved into ninth on the league’s all-time scoring list with 27,423 career points.

NFL: The Eagles are trading veteran QB Joe Flacco to the Jets in exchange for a conditional 2022 sixthround draft pick, ESPN reported. Jets rookie QB Zach Wilson sprained the PCL in his right knee during Sunday’s loss to the Patriots and will be sidelined two to four weeks. NHL: Devils G Mackenzie Blackwood received his first dose of a COVID vaccine last week, ESPN reported. When fully vaccinated, Blackwood would be eligible to play for the Devils on the road against Canadian teams and to compete for a roster spot on Team Canada for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Blackwood, 24, was the Devils’ only unvaccinated player entering the season.
