Angels:

Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon will undergo surgery for a right wrist injury and miss the rest of the season, the team announced Friday. Rendon reaggravated a previous injury to the wrist during Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers and has not played since. Rendon, 32, has played in 155 of the Angels’ 384 games during the first three seasons of the $245 million, sevenyear deal he signed before the 2020 season. Interim manager Phil Nevin said Thursday before the Angels began a three-game series at Seattle that Rendon seemed to be doing better and might be available to pinch-hit. Instead, he’ll have another season cut short by injury. Rendon batted .228 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 45 games this season. Last year, he was limited to 58 games and hit .240 with nine homers and 34 RBIs. His best season came in 2019 with the Nats when he was an All-Star and led the NL with 126 RBIs.

Padres: Padres righthander Joe Musgrove has been placed on the COVID19 injured list, interrupting his stellar season The team announced the move on Friday night Musgrove’s 1.59 ERA ranks second in the majors, and he is 8-0 on the season, tied with four others for the major league lead in wins. He has recorded a quality start in each of his 12 appearances, becoming the seventh pitcher since 1994 to begin a season with at least that many in a row Musgrove worked seven innings on Thursday as the Padres beat the Cubs 6-4 at Wrigley Field to complete a four-game sweep. He allowed two runs on nine hits, striking out nine and walking none. The Padres recalled right-hander Reiss Knehr from Triple-A El Paso to take Musgrove’s place on the roster.

Brewers: Keston Hiura hit a tiebreaking home run off Ross Detwiler in the seventh inning, and the Brewers beat the Reds 5-4 in a battle of long balls on Friday. Hunter Renfroe’s three-run homer in the fourth and Willy Adames’ solo shot in the fifth built a 4-0 lead against Hunter Greene on a night every run scored on a homer. Albert Alomar Jr. hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Brandon Drury and Tommy Pham followed with solo drives in the sixth on Eric Lauer’s first two pitches of the inning to tie the score 4-4.

Giants: Carlos Rodón scattered two hits over eight sharp innings and the Giants edged the reeling Pirates 2-0 on Friday night. Rodón (6-4) won his second straight start and lowered his ERA to 2.84 after striking out eight against two walks as the Giants sent the Pirates to their 10th loss in 11 games. Rodón has allowed two runs or fewer in 11 of his 13 starts this season. Camilo Doval worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save. Luis González took the game’s third pitch from Zach Thompson (3-5) over the right-field seats for his third home run.

Orioles: Kevin Cash — who would know a thing or two about good relief pitching — came away impressed by the options the Orioles have for the late innings. “They’ve got some bullpen arms down there that are putting together good seasons, and challenged us,” the Rays manager said. Rookie Adley Rutschman singled home the game’s only run in the seventh as the Orioles handed the Rays their fourth straight loss, 1-0, on Friday. Dean Kremer pitched six scoreless innings, and three Orioles relievers protected the lead.
