Crown Point has added to its public safety ranks with the hiring of a new police officer and the second female firefighter in the city’s history.

Joining Crown Point Fire Rescue as a firefighter/ paramedic is Carley Jansky, who grew up in Schererville where her grandfather was a volunteer firefighter for 31 years.

Jansky is a 2018 graduate of Lake Central High School, where she earned an EMT certificate, according to a news release from the city. She previously served the Lake Hills Fire Department for four years while earning her state firefighter certifications.

In 2021, Jansky graduated from the Franciscan Health Paramedic Academy, and she has been working as a part-time paramedic for Crown Point Fire Rescue for the past three years.

Jansky, who will wear badge No. 72, is assigned to work under the supervision of Battalion Chief Joe Ferrantella. She is the fifth firefighter hired under Mayor Peter D. Land, filling a vacancy created by a retirement.

“As we were looking to expand our Crown Point Fire family, it made perfect sense to have Carley join us full time, Crown Point Fire Chief Mark Baumgarnder Jr. said. “Carley has proven to be an invaluable member of our team over the past three years, and she will continue to serve the Crown Point community well.”

Crown Point’s newest police officer is Rogelio Chavez Jr., who will wear badge No. 124. Also filling a vacancy caused by a retirement this year, Chavez joins the Crown Point Police Department after serving overseas with the United States Army. Chavez served in Kuwait, Iraq, Syria and Jordan, according to a statement from the city. He attended the University of Iowa before his military deployment.

Chavez is a 2018 graduate of TF South High School in Lansing, Illinois. While in high school, Chavez competed in track and cross country and volunteered with Best Buddies, a program that creates one-on-one friendships with students who have special abilities.

In his free time, Chavez volunteers at his church and works with his father at their family-owned business.

With Chavez, the Crown Point Police Department now has 49 full-time police officers.

“The Crown Point Police Department is excited to welcome another new officer to our ranks,” Crown Point Police Chief Ryan Patrick said. “Rogelio is dedicated to serving his country and our community. He is going to be a great addition to the Crown Point Police family.”

Both Chavez and Jansky were officially sworn in on March 1 at Crown Point City Hall by Clerk-Treasurer David Benson.
