Gary girl identified as victim of Borman crash
The Lake County Coroner’s office has released the name of a 6-year-old girl who died in a vehicle accident early Wednesday.
Kyari Wise, of Gary, died in transport to the hospital, the coroner’s office said Thursday. Her exact injuries, however, are listed as “pending.”
Indiana State Police were sent around 1:30 a.m. to the scene of a crash where the occupants were reportedly trapped in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 /94 east of the Burr Street exit, according to a release. ISP investigators determined that a 2016 silver Nissan Altima was stopped in the right lane when it was struck by a 2014 Volvo semi pulling a loaded trailer full of mail.
The semi struck the rear of the Altima, which caused catastrophic damage, police said. Two adults and three children — none of whom was properly restrained in child safety seats — were inside the car, according to the release.
The ISP said the driver of the Nissan, Ta’Quana L. Crawford, 27, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was transported to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Police said the other occupants of the vehicle sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and were treated locally or flown out for specialized treatment.
The driver of the semi, Orlando Shaw, 49, from Wheeling, Illinois, was not injured.
The Indiana State Police said the crash investigation is in its early stages.
The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction, Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division, Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Division, Gary Police, Gary Fire/EMS, and Double T Towing assisted at the scene.
