Raiders turn to Garoppolo

-

Jimmy Garoppolo has agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Raiders, likely answering the question of who will be the Raiders’ starting quarterback next season.

Garoppolo’s contract includes $34 million in the guaranteed money, the person said.

The Raiders have been linked to Garoppolo almost from the moment coach Josh McDaniels benched nine-year starter Derek Carr with two weeks left in the season. Carr, the Raiders’ all-time leader with 35,222 passing yards and 217 touchdown passes, has since signed with the Saints.

McDaniels was the Patriots’ offensive coordinator when Garoppolo backed up Tom Brady beginning in 2014. With Brady locked in as the starter, Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers during the 2017 season and immediately became the 49ers’ starter.

He was effective when healthy, going 38-17 and taking the 49ers to the 2019 and 2021 NFC championship games. They made the Super Bowl in the 2019 season. But the 31-year-old Garoppolo has had several significant injuries. In 2018, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the third game, and in 2020 he missed eight games with ankle injuries.

The 49ers had planned to trade Garoppolo before last season and start Trey Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 draft whom the team gave up three first-round picks to acquire. Garoppolo underwent offseason shoulder surgery, killing trade interest in him from other clubs, so the 49ers re-signed him at a reduced deal.

49ers agree to deal with Hargrave:

The 49ers made a big addition to their stellar defense, agreeing to a four-year, $84 million contract with star defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.

The deal with Hargrave included $40 million in guarantees and gives the the 49ers a top interior pass rusher to team with AP Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa on the edge.

Chiefs add OT Taylor:

Jawaan Taylor has agreed to an $80 million, four-year contract with the Chiefs to replace Orlando Brown Jr. as the blindside protector for Patrick Mahomes.

The 25-year-old Taylor started all 66 games he’s played in since entering the league as a secondround pick of the Jaguars in the 2019 draft.

Broncos give Wilson some help on the line:

Right tackle Mike McGlinchey and guard Ben Powers are set to sign with the Broncos. McGlinchey agreed to a five-year deal worth $87.5 million with $50 million guaranteed. Powers agreed to a four-year deal worth $52 million, including $28.5 million guaranteed.

Falcons to sign Bates, get Smith:

The Falcons have agreed to a four-year, $64 million contract with safety Jessie Bates.

The Falcons also agreed to acquire tight end Jonnu Smith from the Patriots. The Falcons are sending a seventh-round pick to the Patriots. The Falcons also announced that Pro Bowl guard Chris Lindstrom has signed a five-year contract extension, making him the NFL’s highest-paid guard. The deal, which will keep Lindstrom with the Falcons through the 2028 season, is worth $105 million.
