Several July live-music events upcoming very soon

- Terry Joe Wiles

Well, what a nice break in the weather for the Fourth of July Weekend. Most outdoor events went off without a hitch. I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday.

However, I feel that the third week of summer will bring it all back into seasonal temps and humidity. It’s a good thing spring and fall, even winter weather, are tolerable enough to up with the high temps, mosquitoes and flies. I have seen a lot of pretty garden picture. I got a few tomatoes and a row of okra planted between rain and sick spells, and I can’t believe that I would ever say this BUT I am craving a mess of yellow squash, straight or crookneck — just one mess, though.

Live-music events from here to yonder are happening this month. David Carbrey, singer/songwriter for Butch Cavandishn has a gig July 23 at JJ’s Grill.

The Fort Smith (Ark.) Jazz Jam will be at the Bakery District on July 21.

Live Wire featuring Felisha McKenzie will be in Poteau at Joe’s Place on July 30.

Rearvue Mirror will be at Crocky’s on July 15.

Next Month, you will get another chance to attend a George Jones Tribute on Aug. 13. This one will be Family AND climate friendly ! It will be at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center — INSIDE — on the main stage. It will be cool and dry, so mark your dance card for this. More information later but Silent Thunder will be the house band, with J.B. Lloyd and Gabrielle Gore singing all your favorite George (and Tammy) country hits.

As for live music this weekend, Dawn’s Diner in Red Oak will have live music for three nights. On Thursday, Pake McEntire will be singing and fiddling around some of his songs and classic country covers. I would like to thank him for sharing his talent with LeFlore County, and I would love to hear some of his rodeo tales about Ricky Ward — his version, anyway.

Then on Friday, Scot Francis will be playing. Scot is a great singer. You will enjoy his show.

On saturday, there will be a change of pace and music, Grannie’s Nightmare will be rocking the place. Brad and Rocky Sumpter and Dale Fraze Sr. are THE hardest-working, most-interactive R&R band around. So, go grab a bite to eat, enjoy the music and tel them I said ‘Hey!’ The music will start at 7 p.m. every night.

MJ and the Geezers will be out on Hwy 71 at Boondocks on Friday. There will be awesome food and drinks, and an intimate setting to listen to live music. Michelle “MJ” Faulkenberry, Chuck Wright and Rodney Reed play smooth, soulful music — Americana Style. Now, I am not trying to pigeon-hole this band. They play Crosby, Stills and Nash songs, a Pink tune, John Prine, Fleetwood Mac and a couple of Chuck Berry’s tunes. So for an evening of pretty classy music from this talented trio, head on out to Boondock’s Grill. Music will start at 7 p.m.

Movin’ On — classic country and rock dance music at it’s finest — will be at LaHuerta’s on Thursday night in Fort Smith. On the main stage from 7-9:30 pm, they are a favorite on Garrison Avenue. The guys — Harry Jones/guitar and vocals, Hank Jones/drums and Lundy Taylor/bass — have fun, and it is contagious. It’s kind of the “Hee Haw” crossed with “American Bandstand” fun. Then on Saturday, they will be playing at The Crazy Horse Saloon up in Prairie Grove, Ark. The music will starts at 9 p.m. and last until 1 a.m. It’s just a few miles east of Fayetteville, Ark., on U.S. 62.

Libby Starkes and the Stray Dawgs will be playing for the dancers on Friday at the Fort Smith Senior Activity Center. It’s a great place with a big dance floor, NS/ND and awesome music. The music will start at 8 p.m. Then they will play at The Quarter Horse Saloon at Tuskahoma on Oklahoma State Highway 2. The music will starts at 8 p.m. There will be a party going on. So, be there.

The Interstate 40 Dance and Music Hall will feature The Lawman Band for the line dancers every Thursday night at 7 p.m. Then, Country Express will play classic country on Saturday at 7 p.m. Bootscoot up there and enjoy the music and dancing.
