Remembering what Independence Day really means

As we close out this Fourth of July Weekend, I’m hoping everyone had an opportunity to visit one of the areas fireworks shows. They seem to have been scheduled so that one was available every night this past weekend. As we enjoyed these displays, it was a great time to reflect on what Independence Day really means.

Our nation’s founders came here for freedom. They soon discovered that to achieve this, they would have to throw off the restraints of the British government, which taxed them excessively without allowing them adequate representation. When the members of the Continental Congress drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence, they were declaring themselves free from tyranny and oppression and saying they would forge their own government that was by the people, of the people and for the people. They knew they would face war and hard times, but freedom was worth it. It still is today. When I see the fireworks and hear their boom, I think of the phrase, “Let freedom ring!”

Lastly, we should remember these displays are rather expensive and donated by area business and individuals. We should show our appreciation every chance we get.

Last week, our primary elections took place. There seemed to be so many candidates that it was difficult to distinguish differences, but now the fields are narrowed for run-off races Aug. 23 and the general election in November. It will be easier to pick up on differences between those running. Several won their primary outright with no run-off, and I wish to congratulate them. Many didn’t make the runoff, but I wish to thank them for participating in our democratic process. Aug. 23 is not far away. I encourage everyone to do their research and promote the candidate of their choosing. Now is interim study time, and I have requested one dealing with automobile insurance. We will know soon if it is approved or not. If it is, I will publicize more details as others with similar circumstances might want to share, but it will focus on insurance following the driver as well as the vehicle.
