County Commissioners to deal with equipment, personnel matters in Monday morning’s meeting

-

The LeFlore County Commissioners will deal with equipment and personnel matters during their weekly meeting at 9 a.m. Monday at the LeFlore County Court House.

The board will look to approve disposing of two garbage disposals, a television and a vacuum that are being submitted by the LeFlore County Detention Center and possibly awarding a bid for purchasing a 2007 and 2008 Mack trucks to benefit District 2’s highway department.

The County Commissioners will look to approve the appointment of Mike Robinson and Luke Fitzgerald to the LeFlore County Public Health Management Authority (LeFlore County Solid Waste) Board as well as the LeFlore County Assessor Deana Morrison’s 2022 assessor’s veterans exemption letter and 2023 additional homestead exemption.

The board is expected to approve purchase orders, payroll, bonds, monthly fee reports, transfer of appropriations, blanket purchase orders and contract labor/ service agreements.

LeFlore County Emergency Management Director Dennis Yochum is slated to be at Monday morning’s meeting to advise the Commissioners if a burn ban needs to be put in place.

Also, if there is any old or new business and/or any pay estimates due Robinson Construction for its work on the final phase of the Conser Road Project, the board is expected to take care of these matters.

It is not certain if after the meeting adjourns if there would be a third straight week of discussion dealing with putting the proposal of seven-days-a-week liquor sales by retail spirit license owners in a special election, a proposal being strongly supported by Northside Liqour Store owner Pat Gillham.

At the Jan. 17 meeting, Gillham spoke to the County Commissioners about the proposed legislation Walmart and its lobbyists are pushing, which would allow the national retail store to be allowed to sell liquor all seven days of operations, including Sundays — which the retail spirit license owners cannot currently do by law.

After District 1 County Commissioner Vallard Campbell III made a motion to have the measure placed in a special election for voters to approve/disapprove, the motion died due to no second.

After the motion died, District 3 County Commissioner Jamie Oliver made a motion to table taking any action, which was then seconded by District 2 Commissioner and Board Chairman Cody Covey and unanimously approved.

At last Monday morning’s meeting, Gillham, along with local attorney Glenn Thompson and about 20 other retail spirit license owners, was in attendance, once again strongly urging the board to approve putting the measure to a vote of the public. All three commissioners shared their viewpoint, but no motion was made to put the proposal out for a special election.

However, Oliver then made a motion, which passed by a 2-1 margin, suggesting supporters seek the necessary amount of signatures on a petition, roughly 1,800, to show those in favor of such a measure coming up in a special election.

Both Oliver and Thompson made comments about getting with LeFlore County District Attorney Kevin Merritt on the subject, but Gillham said that she plans on coming back to each week’s meeting to get updates on the measure until a final decision is made by the County Commissioners.
