Pocola rolls by Heavener at home

In their first Black Diamond Conference meeting of the basketball season, Pocola swept Heavener at home on Thursday.

Pocola’s girls beat Heavener 50-30, cruising after a fiery first quarter.

The girls in maroon and white dealt their Black Diamond Conference rival a 20-0 first quarter shutout with Allyssa Parker and Kail Chitwood making layups towards the end of the period.

Pocola (11-4), which is ranked sixth in Class 2A, ended the second quarter with a 7-0 run, with Chitwood making a close-up shot for a 31-6 halftime lead. McKinley Alexander drove for a layup with four seconds left in the third quarter, getting Heavener within 43-23.

Parker led Pocola with 17 points (10 in the first quarter) while Chitwood had 12, Kylee Smith had 11 and Riley Jerrell had four. Alexander had 11 while Garcia had eight and Ava Cartwright had six.

Pocola’s boys (10-5), the eighth-ranked team in Class 2A, beat Heavener (13-3), the No. 19 team in Class 3A, 56-32.

Pocola led 9-5 after one quarter. The Indians led 23-13 at halftime.

Garrett Scott hit a trey from the left wing with 6:40 left in the third quarter to spark a 15-1 Pocola run for a 40-16 lead.

The Indians ended the quarter ahead 46-21.

Scott led Pocola with 17 points while Dakota Terrell added 16, Brayden Hardwick had eight and Austin Hardwick had seven and Zac Jones had four. Pocola held Heavener post player Landon Thurman to six points. Isaac Cook tied for the team lead with six while Devry Ritter added five and Jackson Club had four.

Pocola hosted Talihina while Heavener was at Wilburton on Friday. After visiting Panama on Monday, Pocola goes to Stigler on Tuesday. Heavener is at Talihina on Tuesday.
