- By Jim Marsh Sports correspondent

Poteau’s wrestling team celebrated Senior Night in style on Monday, as it celebrated their two seniors, Kody Coyle and Will Restine.

The Pirates easily disposed of the Greenwood Bulldogs 51-12 and followed that by defeating the Heneryetta Knightss by the score of 69-6.

Heneryetta won the first match at 106 pounds, and then did not win another match for the rest of competition against the Pirates. Josh Luke and Bryce Cantwell did not draw foes at their weight classes and won by forfeit.

Jack Egbert pinned his foe and Jake Fredrickson won by forfeit.

J.T. Lowe posted a pin, and then Maverick Wooten followed with a pin of his own. After that, Coyle won by forfeit.

At 157, Camden Crews was awarded max points as he, too, posted a pin fall. The final four grapplers in the Poteau lineup wasted little time as they each put their opponents’ shoulders on the mat. Jance Sommers, Luke Brooks, Tyler Fassio and Restine did the honors.

As Poteau began its match with Greenwood, Poteau went with Ashly Johnson fighting valiantly but she came up short as she lost 4-0. Cantwell was awarded a forfeit for the Pirates’ 6-3 lead.

Will Newman followed that with a pin fall.

Egbert drew Kevin Yang, and the pair had a tooth-and-nail match as Egbert got a late takedown to win 11-7.

Fredrickson won by style points as he was in a defensive stalemate before earning a 4-0 decision.

Lowe turned a close match into a pinning combination late in the match for a 24-3 lead.

Wooten drew Pablo Ambriz. The two were well-matched, and Ambriz scored two points late to win 8-6.

Coyle and Rhett Williams fought to a sixminute draw, as Williams posted a one-point escape as the third-period buzzer sounded. Coyle posted a perfect counter move in overtime as Williams shot in for a single-leg takedown, but Coyle did a back flip and was awarded two points and the 9-7 win. Poteau led 27-6.

Crew won by the score of 8-4. Sommers was in a scoreless struggle until he came to life in the third period and posted a 5-0 win. Poteau led 33-6.

Brooks toyed with his opponent as he kept on posting two-point takedowns and letting him go. Two points for one is not bad. When the score got to 10-4, Brooks began to get near fall point until he post the pin. Fassio got caught an early takedown. Then, he posted a reversal and the pin.

Restine did his best to catch his opponent, who was in a backup mode in the first period and took the down position in the second. The Bulldog, quickly posted the pin.

Poteau will wrestle at regionals Feb.17-18.
