Wildcats sneak up on Pirates; Poteau girls master homecoming night

Poteau’s girls basketball team evened its record with a homecoming win against Wister while the Pirates were unable to fend off the Wildcats on Tuesday.

The Wister Wildcats trailed until the midpoint of the final stanza beating the Poteau Pirates 51-43.

Both teams lost one of their better players, as Poteau’s Dax Collins went down in the third quarter with what appeared to be an ankle injury. Midway through the final quarter, Wister (17-5) lost C.J. Halford with a knee injury.

Poteau’s scoring went south in the final quarter as they only managed seven points. Poteau (710) held the Wildcats, to only two made buckets but Wister went 12-of-18 on free throws.

Adrian Conchos and Connor Whitworth, Poteau’s low post scored 10 points in the first. Poteau lead 17-9 after one period.

Wister began to find their stroke and got to with one point at the intermissi­on. Landon Donaho warmed up as he had a pair of treys and a deuce in his hand. The score at intermissi­on was 23-22 with the Pirates holding high ground.

The second half was peculiar as the Pirates only had 15 points on six shots, while Wister made six shots for 13 points. Forty free throws was attempted in the last half. Poteau was 5-of-14, while Wister was 16-of-26. Both teams lost their continuity due trips to the free-throw line.

13. Midway through, Poteau started making complete lineup changes. Poteau won 53-28.

Even though the junior attendent in homecoming, Gracyn Soehlman, was dormant in scoring during the first quarter, she finished the night with nine points to lead all scorers. Branscum was the top Wister (9-13) scorer as she scored eight points.

Poteau scored nine points in the first and second quarter each, leading Wister by two at halftime.
