Pocola ends regular slate by sweeping Heavener

Heavener was unable to catch Pocola as the Black Diamond Conference rival pulled off a sweep of Heavener’s Senior Night games on Monday.

Pocola benefits from defense, scoring balance

Balanced scoring and good defense both proved to be the difference for Pocola in its 56-38 win against Heavener.

A two-pointer by Mariana Garcia gave Heavener a 6-4 lead with 2:58 left in the first quarter.

Pocola led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.

A 3-pointer by McKinley Alexander cut the Pocola lead to 22-16 with 2:40 left in the second quarter.

Pocola (17-5), the No. 4 team in Class 2A, led 24-18 at halftime.

A two-pointer by Bailey Lairamore gave Pocola a 31-20 lead with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter.

Pocola led 36-25 at the end of the third quarter.

Kylee Smith’s old-fashioned 3-pointer extended the Pocola lead to 46-28 with 4:54 left in the game.

Allyssa Parker led Pocola with 16 points, followed by Lairamore with 14 points, Riley Jerrell with 11 points, Kail Chitwood with nine points, Kylee Smith with six points and Dauslyn Brown with a point.

Brooklyn May led Heavener with 10 points, followed by Alexander with nine, Bryleigh Edmondson with six, Kinley Brand with five, Garcia with four, Faith Wann with three and Ava Cartwright with one.

Pocola led 21-11 at the end of the first quarter.

A two-pointer by Dakotah Terrell gave Pocola a 29-13 lead with 4:37 left in the second quarter. Pocola (17-6), the eighthrank­ed team in Class 2A, led 35-17 at halftime.

Pocola outscored Heavener (17-5), the 19thranked team in Class 3A, 38-26 in the third and fourth quarters.

Austin Hardwick and Garrett Scott led Pocola with 18 points apiece, and Terrell scored 17. Zac Jones had 12. Brayden Hardwick had five, and Logan Dunigan had three.

Landon Thurman led Heavener with 20 points, followed by Nick Lopez with seven, Jackson Clubb and Zaid Rodriguez with five each, Dalton Semore with four and Bryce Morrison with two.

Pocola hosts Wilburton on Friday for its district playoff. Heavener will visit Spiro on Saturday for its district. Each playoff has girls games at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:30 p.m.
