Howe girls win sixth straight, Lions fall on Senior Night

Howe’s girls extended their winning streak to six games while the boys suffered two early-week losses to end the regular season.

Getting 17 points from Abby Huie, 10 points from Gracie Lute and great defense were all huge for the Howe Lady Lions in their 64-27 win against Keys on Senior Night at Howe on Tuesday during a second straight night of Big 8 Conference competitio­n.

“We honored our seniors. They worked really hard for us. Defensivel­y, we were able to communicat­e very well. Offensivel­y, we want to encourage each other. We got a lot of that tonight,” Howe head coach Chris Brown said.

A 3-pointer by Huie gave Howe a 9-6 lead with 1:36 left in the first quarter. Howe (19-5), the eighthrank­ed team in Class 2A, led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter.

A 3-pointer by Lute gave Howe an 18-8 lead with 6:05 remaining in the second quarter.

A three-point play by Ashlynn Dalton capped an 8-0 run by Howe, which extended their lead to 26-8 with 3:51 left in the second quarter. Howe led 35-13 at halftime.

A two-pointer by Lute capped a 13-2 run by Howe which widened the lead to 48-15 with 3:34 left in the third quarter.

Howe led 50-15 at the end of the third quarter. Howe outscored Keys 1412 in the fourth quarter.

Supporting scorers include Kadynce Delt and Slatey Jo Free with eight points each, Jurnee Williams with seven points, Karsyn Nye with six, Ashlynn Dalton with four. Mariah Smith with two and Jazz Harrison had one.

Howe pummeled Westville 70-39 at home on Monday. Howe led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter, 44-15 at halftime and 5627 through three quarters.

Free led Howe with 16 points while Huie had 14, Lute had seven, Nye, Dalton and Wann with six each, Kadynce Delt with four each, Smith and Serenity Woolery with three each and Harrison with one.

Defenses limit Lions

Great defense by Keys proved to be the difference in dealing the Howe Lions a 43-33 loss on Senior Night at Howe on Tuesday.

Keys led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. A two-pointer by Brayden Dalton cut the Keys lead to 22-15 with 1:50 left in the second quarter. Keys led 25-17 at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Kobe Wooten cut the Keys lead to 29-25 with 2:26 left in the third quarter.

Keys led 33-25 at the end of the third quarter.

A two-pointer by Kyler Brown cut the Lions’ deficit to 39-33 with 1:55 left in the game.

Jaxon Remy led Howe with 10 points, while Kobe Wooten had nine points, Kyler Brown had five points, Braden Blake had four, Garrett Smith had three and Brayden Dalton had two.

Howe lost 51-42 to Westville on Monday.

Howe trailed 13-6 at the end of the first quarter, 27-16 at halftime and 4331 through three quarters.

Brayden Dalton led Howe with 12 points. Reece Harrison had 10. Braden Blake had nine. Remy had seven. Wooten and Smith had two each.

Howe will host Wister for its district playoff on Saturday with the girls game at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:30 p.m.
