Salute to FFA Week in Thursday’s edition; R.I.P., Ben Curtis

- David Seeley PDN Editor

will have a two-promotion-in-one sort of in honor of agriculture.

This week is National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Week, which locally will end with the annual LeFlore County Junior Livestock Show at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds. Our front page has the scheduled for this week’s annual event.

In honor of National FFA Week, PDN is celebrating with our Salute to National FFA Week in our Thursday edition.

On March 23, the other part of the special PDN promotion will be our Salute to National Agriculture Week.

The deadline to advertise in both special salutes is the end of the day today. Advertisers have to advertise in both of them — not just one of them. A 2x2 business card-size ad for both salutes is $68.

You can get with me by telephone at (918) 6473188, Ext. 30 or by e-mail at editor@poteaudailynews.com or with PDN Advertising Representative Michelle Wann by e-mail at michellewann@poteaudailynews.com or girls3my@hotmail.com or by text messaging her at (918) 721-4441.

Look for coverage of this week’s LeFlore County Junior Livestock Show in our editions throughout the event.

Speaking of Michelle, be in prayer for her. Weekend before last, she was in a very serious accident that nearly claimed her life and had her in the hospital most of all last week. She went home Friday, and is slowly recovering. However, being the trooper she is, she is trying to help us get advertisements for our aforementioned salutes and more.

Keep Michelle in your prayers.

The Poteau Daily News’ 2023 Welcome Guide will come out next month.

I’ve been working on editorial content for it, while Michelle did her yeoman’s duty getting advertisements.

I’ll keep you informed as to when it will become available throughout Poteau and LeFlore County.

I want to take this moment to thank the Poteau Pirates Quarterback Club for inviting myself and Sports Editor Tom Firme to Sunday night’s 2022 Football Awards Banquet.

While Tom does the honors theses days for covering sports for PDN, it’s still nice to be included in such invitations and to enjoy a sports-related event every now and then. Check out Page 8 for coverage from Sunday night’s event.

Last week was a somber one for Poteau and LeFlore County as one of its greatest community leaders, lawyer and a fellow Poteau Kiwanis Club member Ben Curtis passed away on Feb. 13.

It would take up this entire opinions page to mentioned just what all he did. Although his health declined in his latter years, when he could come to the weekly Thursday afternoon Kiwanis Club meetings, he did. Because his health kept him from attending regularly, we had a standing joke that when we saw him walk in, we said there’s the “Membership Committee Chairman” for our local civic organization.

I know you all as well as me wish to thank Ben for all he did for Poteau and LeFlore County.

R.I.P., Ben.

The high school basketball playoffs are now hot and heavy as most of our schools still have at least one team, some both boys’ and girls’ teams, vying for that all-elusive gold ball — which the Pocola Lady Indians captured last March when they knocked off county rival Howe in the Class 2A finals.

Tom is doing his best trying to keep you fans updated through both our physical editions and website updates.

Good luck to those teams who are still alive in postseason play..
