Restine wins title at regional; Poteau sends eight to state
Poteau’s boys wrestling team will have seven participants in the Class 4A state tournament Friday and Saturday, in addition to Ashly Johnson in the girls tourney.
Will Restine led the Pirates’ finishes at the Class 4A East regional in Catoosa, which took place Friday and Saturday.
Restine earned the top prize in the heavyweight division by beating previously undefeated Roman Garcia of Wagoner via sudden victory in the final. Restine pinned his first three opponents in less than 200 seconds each, including a victory by fall in 1:59 in his semifinal match.
Luke Brooks took second in the 175-pound class. He lost the final 10-7 to Catoosa’s Corey Chilcoat after winning his semifinal by an 8-3 decision against Sallisaw’s Bodie Adams.
Also making state were Will Newman at 120, Jake Fredrickson at 132, J.T. Lowe at 138, Kody Coyle at 150 and Jance Sommers at 165.
Fredrickson took third, defeating Cushing’s Cash Stapleton by a 9-7 decision after beating Ada’s Jacob Bohannon by fall in 4:57 in the consolation semifinal.
Newman took fourth losing his third-place match by fall at the 5:53 mark after beating Hilldale’s Andrew Furstenburge by technical fall in the consolation semifinal.
Coyle and Sommers placed fifth.
Coyle earned a 6-2 decision against Miami’s Adam Kimanzi in his fifthplace match.
Sommers won a 7-4 decision against Ada’s J.B. Coyle in his fifth-place match.
Also, Bryce Cantwell at 113, Jack Egbert at 126 and Tyler Fassio at 190 placed sixth. As a team, Poteau placed fifth with 149.5 points.
Friday state tournament action at the state fairgrounds in Oklahoma City includes wrestle-in, first-round, consolation first-round and semifinal matches. The remaining matches are on Saturday.
