Poteau lifts its way to regional title
Poteau’s powerlifting team won the large-school regional title on Thursday at Hartshorne.
The Pirates totaled 253 points, 107 more than second-place McAlester, and had four lifters win their weight classes.
Chris Garcia won at 132 with 1,015 pounds while Mason Honeycutt was third with 775 pounds.
At 157, Jackson Sommers won with 1,160.
The Pirates swept the top three at 181. Eli Newby won with 1,380 pounds while Caesar Gutierrez totaled 1,135 and Spencer Perry was third with 1,130.
At 198, Christian Owens won with 1,365 pounds. Brandon Carshall was third with 1,290.
At 168, Caleb Bridges was second with 1,130 pounds.
The large-school state meet will be Friday at El Reno High School.
Most weight classes in the small-school division on Friday did not complete before press time.
At 123, Heavener’s Tony Adkins placed second with 780, five pounds short of Weleetka’s Kell Kleck.

In the junior-high regional on Thursday, Talihina had two seventhgraders in the top three while Poteau had four eighth-graders in the top three.
In the seventh-grade division, Talihina’s Kai King won at 105 with 535 pounds. At 181, Panama’s Gage Gould placed third with 605 pounds.
At 198, Talihina’s Jack Worley was third with 615 pounds.
In the eighth-grade divison, Pocola’s Gunner Hilden was third at 105 with 500 pounds.
At 132, Poteau’s Coy Fredrickson was second with 735 pounds.
At 145, Poteau’s Hudson Watkins was third with 825 pounds. At 157, Poteau’s Caston Fox took second with 830 pounds.
At 220, Panama’s Tristan Jordan won with 1,080 pounds while Hunter Covey-Bond was third with 940. Among freshmen, Panama’s Oakley Shoup was third at 198 with 895 pounds.
The state meet for junior high will be Thursday at El Reno High School.
