Talihina falls short vs. Hartshorne
Talihina’s boys basketball team lost their Senior Night duel with Black Diamond Conference rival Hartshorne 37-29 on Monday despite rallying from a 16-point thirdquarter deficit.
Hartshorne scored the first eight points of the game before Tailihina Noah Lloyd made a fast break layup to allow the Golden Tigers to end the first quarter within 8-2.
The Miners scored seven unanswered points within two and a half minutes of the second quarter. Kaidon Potts grabbed a steal with 12 seconds left in the half, but couldn’t finish as Talihina entered the break behind 15-2.
Ramses Hernandez drained a straightaway three on the first play of the third quarter as Tailihina scored the first five points of the period to get within 15-7. Hartshorne scored the next eight points.
Cy Ammons hit a three at the buzzer to keep Talihina within 27-15.
Hernandez got Talihina within 27-22 with a layup as 4:40 remained.
Potts made a layup to tie it at 27 with 2:55 left. However, Talihina’s momentum evaporated as Sam Bryant fouled Hartshorne post player Luke Rowten as he lobbed a point-blank shot into the basket.
Rowten converted the three-point play, and the
Miners continued on a nine-point run.
Ammons led Talihina with points while Potts and Hernandez each had seven and Bryant had six.
Talihina’s girls (9-13) lost 56-31.
Talihina stood within 15-7 at the end of the first quarter, 27-18 at halftime before slipping to a 42-24 deficit by the end of the third quarter.
Paklani Brock, Khloe Holland and Brooke Whiteeagle each scored seven points.
Talihina girls head coach Josh Fields said his team has a good chance to beat Tushka in its Class A Area III district tourney at Tushka (19-5, ranked 14th) on Saturday after getting past Bennington (8-12) in the district opener on Friday. Talihina lost 43-37 to Tushka in the Tushka AmeriState Invitational semifinal on Jan. 5.
Talihina’s boys (10-12) stand as the top seed in the district to face the winner of Tushka (11-13) and Bennington (16-5).
