The fight is on against addiction plaguing our communities
633 RECOVERY
In the rural backwoods’ landscapes of our communities, here in southeastern Oklahoma, a silent killer is lurking beneath the surface: ADDICTION
While our tight-knit country communities define the region, the Pain of addiction is ripping families and communities, particularly in rural areas, apart.
The vastness of rural southeastern Oklahoma communities often translates to isolation, both geographically and socially. With limited access to Recovery housing and meetings, people facing addiction find themselves in a fight with their DEMONS alone. Without access to the tools, they need to fight, makes it nearly impossible, leaving individuals hopeless in their addiction.
In the midst of dealing with childhood trauma and other life altering events that has brought pain, substance abuse becomes a way of life for many masking their hurts and hardships. High unemployment rates and limited job opportunities for felons contribute to feelings of hopelessness and despair, pushing individuals toward drugs and alcohol as a temporary escape.
The ripple effects of addiction extend far beyond the individual, tearing apart families and ravaging our communities. Kids are growing up in unstable environments, forced to endure violence and being abused, seeing the destructive power of addiction firsthand while being caught up to be the next generation of addicts. Communities are left torn apart with increased crime rates, strained social services, and a sense of feeling helpless.
Despite the number of challenges, efforts to combat addiction are underway in our communities. 633 Recovery and other Grassroots organizations, faithbased groups, and healthcare providers are working hand in hand with our community leaders to provide support and resources to those in need. Initiatives aimed at increasing access to treatment, educating our local churches and community leaders about addiction, and fostering community partnerships to offer hope amidst the darkness.
Call to Action
As the pain of addiction tightens its grip on our communities, there is an urgent need for community leaders and our local churches to be at the forefront of the fight against addiction. Increased funding for treatment facilities, transitional housing, expanded access to Recovery meetings, and local churches working together to strengthen our faith base community is a must to bring change to our communities.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Programs are essential steps towards combating this crisis.
