May the Thor Fun Run at Runestone Park

The deadline for entering the May the Thor be With You 5K Fun Run at Heavener Runestone Park is April 30. The run takes place on Saturday, May 4 at 9 a.m.

There are two separate fees, a 5K Race Entry Fee is $35, and a Fun Run Entry Fee is $25. The Fun Run Entry Fee would come with no competition or trophy awards. High school students can get a discounted price of $20 by using codes “student5K” for the 5K run and “studentfunrun” for the Fun run.

Every person who enters will receive a race T-shirt and a participation award. There will be a ceremony at the end of the race. Place trophies for first, second, and third place will be awarded in four separate categories. Categories are:

5K Run Adult Men (18+)

5K Run Adult Women (18+)

5K Run Kids (12-17) 5K Walk Adult According to Lynn Webster, Friends of the Heavener Runestone President, this is the first time the park is holding this run.

She said they have had other similar Thorthemed runs in the past, but they were put on hold due to COVID. Now, she says, everyone is excited for things to get back to normal.

“We’re trying slowly but surely to get things back on track,” Webster said.

She said there will be at least two water stations along the run to keep people hydrated. The course includes uphill and downhill phases. This will be challenging whether people are walking or running, she said.

“It’s a true 5K,” Webster said.

The date and name of the run was inspired by Star Wars Day, which is on May 4.

She said they also came up with an interesting character to promote the event and put on T-shirts, who looks like a Viking with a Darth Vader helmet.

All of the proceeds for this run will benefit Runestone Park and help with operating costs. Webster said this is a great way to support the park, and great practice ahead of the Cavanal Killer 8K Run that takes place in Poteau on May 11.
