As a marine monitoring, tracking, safety, and security system, the Insight X2 from Nautic Alert brings a host of functionality. It takes onboard security to a new level with a microwavebased intrusion-detection module, designed to combat theft better than passive infrared systems, according to the developers. Combined with a GEOS-based SOS and emergency-monitoring service, Insight X2 uses a WAAS-enabled GPS to offer solutions that help keep crew safe with two-way encrypted wireless communications and local responders. The system also links to the Nevata bilge monitor, which Senior Electronics Editor Ben Ellison heaped with praise at pmymag.com, largely due to a built-in temperature sensor that would enable him to keep his boat in the water all winter. Because the Insight X2 is designed by a former IBM employee who has applied server-development experience to the software, the system also monitors and acquires trend information for DC systems, which allows it to “learn” how the boat functions and alert the owner to irregularities sooner than other systems, including low-voltage issues that can lead to other problems. Nautic Alert says the Insight X2 can be programmed to ping a mobile device with system warnings and offer access to settings via a web portal. As the Internet of Things continues to grow, so do the ways to have your boat included in it.
