FLIR One Smartphone Thermal-Imaging Attachment

Thermal-imaging is one of those multi-use tools that boaters have begun to bring on board for multiple uses and the FLIR One is an interesting starting point. Use it in the engine room to discover hot spots in electrical wiring or engine components and head off maintenance problems. Bring it on deck at night to find objects on the surface (though don’t expect the range of a monocular scope, such as the FLIR Scout TK). Working with either iPhone or Android smartphones, FLIR One is now in its third generation, and the evolution has made it more useful. The unit uses the proprietary OneFit adjustable-height connector to work with the cases many boaters enlist to protect their smartphones in the harsh marine environment. The latest version also uses MSX technology, a system that compiles data and detail from both VGA visible-light and thermal-imaging cameras to provide a clear, decipherable image. The built-in Lepton camera is the smallest long-wave infrared sensor available, according to FLIR. The unit is designed to withstand 5-foot drops and comes with an 18-month warranty when the unit is registered.
