UCLA captured its 12th NCAA Championship in men’s water polo with a 7-6 win at No. 4 USC on Sunday afternoon at USC’s Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

It was a balanced scoring effort by the No. 3 Bruins (97), who received goals from six different players. Junior Jake Cavano, who was named to the first team AllNCAA Tournament, scored two goals, including the eventual difference maker with 6:23 left in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Bernardo Maurizi, who also was named first team AllNCAA Tournament, held the Trojans (8-9) scoreless throughout the first half and racked up nine saves. UCLA never trailed in the game, though USC briefly pulled even at 4-4.

Both teams battled defensively in the first period with the Bruins holding a 1-0 lead as freshman Mo Kenney scored the lone goal for UCLA at the 2:02 mark.

Senior Chasen Travisano set up sophomore Tommy Gruwell for the opening score of the second period (7:17) to put UCLA up 2-0. Gruwell was the lone Bruin to be named second team All-NCAA Tournament. Redshirt junior Evan Rosenfeld put the Bruins up 3-0 (5:37) when he beat the Trojan keeper with a nearside skip shot. That was the final goal of the first half.

The Trojans responded in the third period by scoring two goals. The first was by Jacob Mercep and the second was by Chris Sturtevant. Cavano put an end to the Trojans’ scoring run with a power play goal to push the lead to 4-2. But the Trojans again scored backto-back goals to tie it at 4-4. Travisano then got in on the scoring act and put the Bruins back in front at 5-4 with 1:53 left in the third. UCLA maintained that lead heading into the final stanza.

Robinson wins giant slalom final

An aggressive second run lifted teenager Alice Robinson ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin to win a giant slalom that ended the women’s World Cup ski season on Sunday.

Robinson had been fourth-fastest in the opening run, trailing 2018 Olympic champion Shiffrin by 0.77 seconds, yet turned it into a victory by 0.28 at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

“Good job,” Shiffrin, who also started winning World Cup races as a teenager, told Robinson in the finish area.

Meta Hrovat placed third, trailing Robinson by 0.48.

Marta Bassino, who already secured the seasonlong giant slalom title was seventh, 1.45 back.

• Rising from sixth place after the first run in a World Cup slalom, Manuel Feller won the season-ending race on Sunday.

First-run leader Marco Schwarz, who already took the season-long slalom title, lost speed in a difficult section of gates and dropped to sixth place.

Feller benefited from his Austrian teammate’s error and finished 0.08 seconds ahead of Clément Noël of France.

Alexis Pinturault placed third, 0.11 behind Feller, to end his season in style one day after winning a giant slalom to secure his first overall World Cup title.

Pinturault was the first Frenchman to win the overall title for 24 years and an emotional weekend for the team saw Jean-Baptiste Grange race for the last time in the World Cup.
