TODAY

WARREN (1-0) VS. LA SERNA (0-1), AT CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL, 7 P.M.

After a 53-0 win over Long Beach Wilson in Week 0, Warren travels to Whittier to face the Lancers. Despite the shutout, it wasn’t a perfect game for the Bears, who struggled early on with dropped balls and a couple of miscommunications and will look for a better start against La Serna.

La Serna fell in overtime to Bonita, 34-28, but was led by a pair of sophomores, quarterback CJ Ceron (150 passing yards and three touchdowns) and running back Owen Long (17 carries for 105 yards, one touchdown).

These teams have split the last two meetings with La Serna winning 50-6 in their last meeting in 2019.

FRIDAY

LONG BEACH POLY (0-0) AT SERRA (0-1), 7 P.M.

The last four meetings between the storied programs have all been decided by six points or less with the Jackrabbits winning, 27-21, in overtime in March. Poly had its Week 0 game against Leuzinger canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test within the program and will open the season with one of its most talented teams in recent years. Serra lost 31-20to Orange Lutheran last week in the school’s first game on a new turf field.

Senior quarterback and University of Texas commit Maalik Murphy had 229passing yards and two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing).

Murphy going against a deep Poly secondary, led by junior Daylen Austin, will be a great matchup to watch. Serra had won the previous three meetings before Poly won last year.

ALEMANY (0-1) AT ST. JOHN BOSCO (1-0), 7 P.M.

Another high-profile home game for the Braves, who beat Miami Central, 35-12 last week.

Alemany traveled to Utah to play Lone Peak and fell, 31-24.

Warriors senior wide receiver Kevin Green Jr. (USC commit) had 12 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown in the loss and senior Dylan Gebbia and sophomore Anthony Wolter split the quarterbacking duties with Wolter having more success (212passing yards and two touchdowns). Alemany has a talented defense led by senior linebacker Niuafe Tuihalamaka (Notre Dame commit), senior safety Larry Turner-Gooden (ASU commit), senior defensive back Ephesians Prysock (19 offers), and senior defensive lineman Damonic Williams (Cal commit).

BONITA (1-0) AT DOWNEY (0-1), 7 P.M.

The Vikings look to avoid an 0-2start when they host the Bearcats. Downey had a tough start against Corona del Mar last week as it fell behind 27-0 at halftime en route to a 36-20loss. Junior Aidan Chiles (102 passing yards, one touchdown) and senior Noah Paez (78passing yards, one touchdown) each split time for Downey and both connected with senior wide receiver Tryse Redford for touchdowns (10 receptions for 123yards, two touchdowns).

In the win over La Serna, Bonita junior quarterback Daniel Andrade had 235 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The Mikhali brothers (Kalim, a senior and Noah, a freshman) led the defense with 14 and 11 tackles.

ST. ANTHONY (0-1) VS. MAYFAIR (1-0) AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL, 7 P.M.

Two local schools separated by less than 10 miles meet in a nonleague matchup. Mayfair won its seasonopener convincingly with a 41-12victory over Chaffey while St. Anthony lost Raul Lara’s coaching debut to San Pedro, 42-0.

The Monsoons last started 2-0 in 2018 when they advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

Saints senior running back Sone Aupiu had 17 carries for 59yards in the loss last week and will continue to see a heavy workload.
