GAME REPORT

- — Doug Padilla

THE GAME: In a game that started an hour earlier than originally planned, as a concession to an approaching rain storm, the Angels held on for a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz., and improved to 4-1 this spring.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Chase Silseth didn't have the start he was looking for, giving up two runs and three hits in three innings, but it was not a complete loss. Silseth is adding a cutter this season and said he threw about 13or 14of them against the Brewers, getting three of his four strikeouts with the pitch. “It's pretty crazy how I have picked up two pitches in a year and a half,” said Silseth, who last added a sinker that helped him reach the major leagues last season. “(Catcher Matt) Thaiss comes in the dugout and said, `Whatever you did, just don't change that.'” ... Left-hander Aaron Loup and right-hander Ryan Tepera had back-to-back scoreless innings, with Loup striking out two. ... Jose Quijada, Andrew Wantz and Gerardo Reyes (save) held the Brewers scoreless on one hit over the final three innings.

HITTING REPORT: Anthony Rendon had an RBI single and Brandon Drury delivered an RBI double in the first inning. “(Drury) has a really good command of the strike zone and I like his approach against right-handed (pitchers) so far,” Manager Phil Nevin said. “It's something he knows he needed to work on a little bit and the at-bats were really good today.” ... Mike Trout walked, singled and lined out in three trips to the plate over five innings . ... Hunter Renfroe singled to lead off the fourth inning and scored a run on a balk.

DEFENSE REPORT: The Brewers' Sal Frelick was retired on a pair of solid plays behind the mound, first by Rendon at third base in the third inning and then by shortstop Gio Urshela in the fifth inning . ... Rendon added to his day by starting a 5-4-3double play to end the third inning but also had a throwing error in the first inning. “Anthony got one that sailed on him a little bit and it gets into the wind there, it's going to take off, but I think we're playing really good defense,” Nevin said. “It's something we attacked this spring, fundamental-wise, and Benji (Gil) is doing a really good job with them.” … First baseman Taylor Jones and shortstop Andrew Velazquez turned a nifty 3-6 double play to end the game.
