GAME REPORT

- — Jeff Fletcher

THE GAME: After Griffin Canning gave up a second-inning homer, the Angels held the Chicago White Sox scoreless in a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon in Glendale, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Canning gave up one run in three innings. Canning said he was particularly pleased with his slider. Adam Haseley flung his bat all the way to third base swinging through a slider for a strikeout. “That kind of gives you some validation that it was a good pitch,” Canning said. Canning's fastball was 94-95 mph, which is harder than it was before he missed a season and a half with a back injury. Canning gave up a homer to Oscar Colas. The double he allowed to Zach Remillard was a blooper into shallow center, and Canning proceeded to pick Remillard off second. In two starts this spring, Canning has allowed one run in five innings, with five strikeouts and one walk. … Right-hander Ben Joyce pitched around a single and two walks in a scoreless inning. His fastball was 100-101mph. He has not allowed a run in five innings this spring. Joyce threw a 99mph fastball behind the head of Seby Zavala before walking him. … Right-hander Ryan Tepera pitched a perfect inning, with one strikeout . ... Left-hander Jhonathan Diaz finished the game with two innings. Diaz has not allowed a run in seven innings this spring. He is likely headed to TripleA as rotation depth.

HITTING REPORT: Jeremiah Jackson and Jordyn Adams had back-to-back hits in the fifth and seventh innings, the latter producing a run. Adams is 8for 18 with a 5walks this spring. He had just three hits in 42 at-bats in big league spring training games prior to this season. Jackson had a ground-rule double in the seventh, and he scored on a single by Adams. After going hitless in his first nine at-bats this spring, Jackson has three hits in his last four at-bats, including a walk-off homer . ... Mickey Moniak had a single and a walk in three trips to the plate.

DEFENSE REPORT: Left fielder Brett Phillips made a catch against the fence… Shortstop Zach Neto snagged a line drive going to his right in the eighth and he made a nice play on a grounder in the hole in the ninth. “Defensively, he could come up here and play,” Nevin said. “He's really, really good.” . ... Second baseman Adrian Placencia, who has made several spectacular plays this spring, misplayed a popup into a double . ... First baseman Taylor Jones made a diving stop and then a throw to left-hander Jhonathan Diaz covering the bag.
