Will Donald Trump be arrested today?

-

Is former President Donald Trump going to be arrested today?

That's our Question of the Week for our readers.

It's obviously an unusual one. Ex-presidents, as a rule, simply do not get arrested.

Jimmy Carter is in hospice care in Georgia and unlikely to be on the radar of law enforcement. George W. Bush is painting watercolors in Dallas, quietly. Barack Obama is writing a book or a speech in his Washington, D.C. mansion and not under any known legal scrutiny.

But Donald Trump wrote Saturday morning on his Truth Social account: “THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE AND FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!” That Tuesday is today. Will Trump's prediction come true? If not today, will he be arrested at all in connection with an investigation by the Manhattan district attorney into hush money paid to an adult film star in 2016?

It's unclear exactly how the former president knows that today is the day the knock would come on his door.

After his social media post, a Trump spokesman said he had not written with direct knowledge of the timing of any arrest, adding, “President Trump is rightfully highlighting his innocence and the weaponization of our injustice system.”

Why would Trump, then, say such a thing?

Depending on when you are writing your response, what does it mean for America if Trump is indeed arrested?

What political implications might it have?

Would it empower him? Or would it weaken him?

Or is all of that irrelevant? If the law is the law, how can you parse out whether a prosecution is in the interests of justice versus political?

What, if anything, would it say about America if a former president were to be arrested for a crime?

If you voted for Trump in the past, do these kinds of stories about him change your perception of him as a political figure?
