THE GAMES: The Angels gave up two runs in the ninth inning of a 6-5 loss to the Oakland A's in Tempe, Ariz., and they beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-1, in Scottsdale, splitting a pair of split-squad games on Tuesday afternoon.
PITCHING REPORT: In Tempe, right-hander Victor Mederos gave up two runs in two innings. Mederos was the Angels' sixthround pick last July . ... Right-hander Austin Warren pitched a scoreless inning. Warren has nine strikeouts and no walks in eight innings this spring. “He's been really good,” manager Phil Nevin said. “I noticed it right in his bullpens when we first got here before we even started camp, where the velo was and where the shapes were, as the spring's gone on, it's played out on the field, it's played against really good hitters. He's put himself in a really good spot.” ... Right-hander Ben Joyce recorded only two outs and allowed two runs. He walked a batter, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches. He also struck out two. Joyce is scheduled to work in a minor league game on Wednesday, giving him back-to-back games for the first time this spring . ... Right-handers Jimmy Herget and Andrew Wantz each pitched a scoreless inning . ... Righthander Mason Erla pitched two scoreless innings but then he gave up two in the ninth to give up the lead . ... In Scottsdale, left-hander Tyler Anderson pitched six scoreless innings, the first Angels pitcher to reach that mark yet this spring. Anderson started the road game instead of the home game so he wouldn't pitch against the A's, who he will face in the season-opening series.
HITTING REPORT: In Tempe, Taylor Ward led off the bottom of the first with a line drive into the right-center field gap. Center fielder Esteury Ruiz dove, but the ball got past him and rolled to the fence. Ward circled the bases for an inside-thepark home run. “That's my first inside-the-parker,” Ward said. “Really weird rounding third. My legs were trying to catch up . ... I needed some oxygen.” ... Luis Rengifo had three hits, including a homer and a double, batting left-handed, which is his worse side of the plate . ... David Fletcher had a pair of hits, including a double down the left field line . ... In Scottsdale, Jo Adell hit his team-leading fourth homer of the spring. The ball left the bat at 115 mph and traveled 430 feet. Adell struck out in his other three trips . ... Anthony Rendon had three hits, including two doubles. Rendon is 12 for 27 (.444) with a 1.294 OPS this spring . ... Brett Phillips had two hits, including a triple. Phillips is 6 for 35 (.171) with a .627 OPS.
DEFENSE REPORT: In Tempe, catcher Matt Thaiss threw out a runner trying to steal second . ... In Scottsdale, first baseman Brandon Drury made a leaping catch of a line drive. It was the first start of the spring at first base for Drury, who is a candidate to start at first against lefties this season . ... Center fielder Brett Phillips made a diving catch . ... Right fielder Jordyn Adams slipped chasing a ball down the line, allowing Ketel Marte to stretch his hit into a triple.
