More than 8,300 residents donated more than $2 million to local nonprofits through Long Beach Gives, an annual citywide fundraising campaign this year — the most money raised during the day of giving in its five year history.

The money will benefit hundreds of nonprofit groups, who serve causes ranging from childhood development to animal welfare, operating in Long Beach. Early giving began on Sept. 14 and was extended through this past Thursday.

Long Beach Gives originally launched in 2019, and since then, has digitally crowdfunded around $6.6 million for hundreds of local nonprofits — not including the additional $2,071,589 raised this year.

“Long Beach Gives 2023 was a huge success,” The Nonprofit Partnership's executive director Michelle Byerly said Monday in a news release. “We saw nonprofits engaging with community and raising funds and awareness in new ways — it is so inspiring to be a part of this event every year.”

Long Beach Gives, aside from hosting the online campaign, also offered the 244 participating groups free training on how to run a fundraiser and to secure matching donations.

The Assistance League of Long Beach, according to Long Beach Gives' news release, raised more than $200,000 for its programs — with plenty more fundraising about $10,000 each for their programs.

“There is so much energy and excitement around Long Beach Gives — we truly felt the community's support this September,” said Long Beach Gives campaign manager Matt Guardabascio, “and are grateful and inspired by the work of Long Beach nonprofits.”
